At 9:30 p.m. on a weeknight in mid-November, the last timed group of the evening will walk into Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. A few miles away, the tree at Reston Town Center will still be dark, and it will stay that way until the day after Thanksgiving. Church Street in Vienna gets its lights the following Monday. Brown's Chapel Park gets them three nights after that.
No single organizer runs the Hunter Mill District's holidays. NOVA Parks, Reston Town Center, the Town of Vienna, Reston Association and Public Art Reston each keep their own calendar. Meadowlark runs nightly in the background, but for about three weeks the other organizers' headline nights fall on separate dates. Then all of them land on Saturday, December 5.
Five hosts, one shared Saturday
Here's the full stretch in date order, with the detail that matters most for each event.

Meadowlark opens first and moves its start time on December 4
NOVA Parks opens the Winter Walk of Lights at 9750 Meadowlark Gardens Court on November 11, 2026, and runs it through January 3, 2027. Through December 3, hours are 5:30 to 10 p.m. Starting December 4, the gates open half an hour earlier, at 5 p.m. Last admission is 9:30 p.m. all season.
That December 4 change also marks the switch in pricing. Early-season and January tickets cost $19 online or $24 at the door. Peak-period tickets, December 4 through 31, are sold online only. NOVA Parks' event page and its ticket-information page give slightly different peak prices, $23 on one and $24 on the other, so check the price on the page where you actually buy. Every ticket is for a specific entry time. Guests generally aren't admitted early or more than 30 minutes late, and the trail itself is self-guided once you're in.
So the lower-priced stretch of Meadowlark's season, when tickets can still be bought at the door, ends the night before Winterfest's middle night. Starting December 4, Meadowlark costs more and has to be booked ahead, just as the weekend gets crowded. If you want an easy midweek visit, the window runs from November 11 through December 3.
New this season, the Vienna Ledger reported a chilled Amaretto Snow Globe drink, and NOVA Parks is selling a limited-edition 2026 ornament. There's also a practical change for anyone whose plans tend to shift. According to NOVA Parks' FAQ, you can now rebook an entire order in a single transaction.
Thanksgiving Friday at Reston Town Center, with a changed restaurant lineup
The Reston Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting is Friday, November 27. The parade steps off at 11 a.m. and the tree is lit at 6 p.m. That leaves about seven hours between the two, which usually means lunch or dinner nearby. Several of the restaurants around the parade route are different from last year.
Clarity, the Vienna restaurant's second location, opened at 1996 Opportunity Way on July 24, FFXnow reported. The menu includes halibut, steaks and chops, French onion soup, a smoked-wagyu cheeseburger and a tasting menu. True Food Kitchen at 11901 Democracy Drive served its last meal on October 4. FFXnow noted that its Merrifield location is still open.
The biggest open question is Ebbitt House, Clyde's new restaurant at 1860 Reston Row Plaza. It was first aimed at October. Its own homepage now says it "opens early November 2026," and The Burn's October 11 update said the team was aiming for about the first week of November. If it opens on that schedule, parade day will be one of its first big weekends. The announced menu includes burgers, steak, house-made pastas, seafood and raw-bar oysters. Check its site before you count on a table.
Monday night on Church Street
Three days later, Vienna holds its own tree lighting. The Church Street Holiday Stroll runs Monday, November 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. Mayor Linda Colbert leads the tree lighting, there's live holiday music from local groups, and Santa and fire pits for roasting marshmallows are set up along the street.
The Stroll keeps to a two-hour schedule. Gingerbread ornament decorating stations are set up along Church Street, and finished ornaments have to reach the Explore Vienna VA tent, across from the Freeman Store, by 7:10 p.m. to be judged. Winners are announced at 7:30 p.m., with prize packs of gift cards to local businesses in several categories, open to ornament artists of all ages. The historic sites will be open too: the Freeman Store and Museum, the Little Library, the Caboose, the Train Station, the Knights of Columbus building that was once First Baptist Church, and Vienna Presbyterian's Old Chapel. Church Street businesses stay open as well.
The route ends at a gingerbread house arch near Lawyers Road, set up for photos. Just around the corner, Weird Brothers Coffee opened its first franchise at 106 Lawyers Road on August 10. The menu covers coffee and tea, breakfast sandwiches, burritos, bowls, paninis and pastries, according to FFXnow. Check its evening hours before you plan on it.
Winterfest runs three nights, and the first two are calmer
Reston Association's Winterfest is back for its fourth year at Brown's Chapel Park, Thursday, December 3 through Saturday, December 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. each night. It includes the half-mile Light Up the Park walk, the Enchanted Forest of sponsored trees, a Vendor Village, fire pits, food trucks, free photos with Santa and a Grinch's Village. New for 2026 is the Polar Play Park, with ice carvings and ice games, weather permitting.
Everyone needs a ticket, including infants. Admission is free for Reston Association members and Recreation Passholders. Nonmembers pay $20 per adult and $10 per child ages 3 to 17, and children 2 and under are free. When the event ends, the decorated trees in the Enchanted Forest go to families in need around Reston through Friends of Reston. On Thursday and Friday, Meadowlark is the only other event on this calendar. On Saturday, Winterfest is one of five.
December 5, from morning to night
This is where the organizers' calendars overlap. Here's Saturday in order:
- 9 to 11:20 a.m., Vienna Community Center. Donuts with Santa runs in two registration-only seatings, 9 to 10:20 a.m. and 10 to 11:20 a.m.
- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Lake Anne Plaza. Public Art Reston lists Jingle on the Lake as a festival art activation that runs all day.
- 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Vienna Community Center. Vienna Theatre Company performs "It's a Wonderful Life" twice.
- 5 to 9 p.m., Brown's Chapel Park. Winterfest's final night.
- 5 to 10 p.m., Meadowlark. It's the second night of the earlier opening time and peak pricing.
Morning plans stack easily, since a Donuts with Santa seating in Vienna ends with plenty of daylight left for Lake Anne. After dark it gets harder. The 7 p.m. curtain at the Community Center falls in the middle of Winterfest's hours, and both overlap Meadowlark's timed entries. If you go to the 4 p.m. performance, you still have time to make Winterfest or a Meadowlark entry later that night. For anyone in Reston who wants Winterfest without the Saturday crowd, the Thursday and Friday nights offer the same program.
Lake Anne is a good place to spend the afternoon. Kinship Wine + Wares at 1635B Washington Plaza North soft-opened over July 4 weekend and held its ribbon-cutting in September, FFXnow reported. It sells wine, vintage housewares, international beers, nonalcoholic drinks and gourmet provisions, which covers a lot of last-minute host gifts.
After the 5th, the calendar spreads out again
After December 5, the remaining dates are quieter and easier to fit around a week. Reston Art Gallery and Studios' free Holiday Sparkle show runs at Lake Anne Plaza from December 1 through 30, with a free reception on December 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. Vienna's Mayor and Council Holiday Reception is Friday, December 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Town Hall, 127 Center Street South. Meadowlark keeps running nightly through January 3, and its last three nights go back to the $19 January online price.
If family is flying in for the holidays, or you're spending your first December here before a posting, I'm glad to help you sort out the dates. At Katie Stowe, I keep track of the local calendar along with the market, and I'm happy to help you plan the weeks around December 5. Schedule a consultation whenever it suits you.
